Did you know ...

More and more children are overweight because of high fat, low fiber diets and because of decreased physical activity. Type 2 diabetes used to be called “adult-onset diabetes”. But, because of the increase in childhood overweight, type 2 diabetes is becoming more common in young people, especially among minority youth.

The diabetes prevention program was a nationwide study conducted by the National Institutes of Health. This study showed that healthy nutrition, exercise habits and weight loss can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes in people who are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In children, programs to improve nutrition and lifestyle habits in order to decrease obesity have been shown to work best when they involve children and their parents (or grandparents) together.
