  • Alcohol and substance use can be avoided by talking openly with your teen

What is addiction?
People who are addicted cannot control their need for alcohol or other drugs, even in the face of negative health, social or legal consequences. This lack of control is the result of alcohol or drug induced changes in the brain. Those changes, in turn cause behavior changes.

  • They like the way it makes them feel
  • They believe it makes them more grown up
  • It seems exciting

  • Household access to alcohol
  • Poor family relationships
  • Parents frequently away from home
  • Teens with poor self-esteem or emotional

  • New friends with little interest in school
  • Red eyes (from marijuana) or other new health problems
  • Smell of substance on the teen

What should you do if you teen is using alcohol or drugs?

  • Talk openly with him/her
  • Be as supportive as you can (harsh words will only push him/her away)
  • If your teen only used a few times, talking openly may solve the problem
  • If your teen is addicted, medical intervention is necessary

If treatment is needed…

  • Get appropriate treatment à see a health professional about appropriate treatment
  • Adult programs DO NOT meet the requirements of a teen alcohol or substance abuser
  • As a parent, be involved with the treatment and aftercare program
  • Get help for the family (family can help keep a teen off substances)
  • Help establish a direction (hobbies, interests, goals of the teen)
  • Plan for relapse— most teens will relapse and need further treatment. Reassure him/her that relapse does not mean failure
