My cord has fallen off for 7 days, but it continues to secrete liquid. My mother tried to clean the cord area by wiping it with alcohol and giving me tub baths, but the secreting got worse. My mother took me to my doctor for help. My doctor suggested stopping the alcohol wiping and tub bathing to keep my cord dry. Several days later, my cord dried up and I can have tub baths. Now my mother knows about cord care:
Before the cord falls off: use alcohol wipes to clean the stump of the cord 2-3 times a day, give me sponge baths.
Right after the cord falls: only use water or alcohol wipes wiping the skin around the cord, leave the stump of the cord dry, and continue sponge baths.
The cord dried without discharge: start tub baths. |

Storage of Breast Milk

My mother wants to store some of her breast milk for me when she goes back to work. But she doesn’t know how to do it. Please let me take your breast first, and then pump out the rest of breast milk after each feeding. Don’t forget to squeeze the base of your breasts when you pump so you may get more milk and finish pumping quickly.
Storage of breast milk: 48 hours in refrigerator ; 3wks in 20-28 F freezers ; 3months in 5-15 F freezers. | |

My mother will go back to work soon and she is wondering how often and how much I should be fed by bottled breast milk during her working time. “Oh, dear mom, I’m gaining weight pretty good. My mind and stomach work well for my appetite. I just need to be fed ad lib, probably every 2-4 hours.” My enlarged breasts are getting smaller. My mother told my doctor she doesn’t worry about it now. |

How to let my baby sleep longer overnight?
Mom, my doctor said that I’m a really good baby for sleeping at night at 1 month old. Please give me a little more time to adjust myself for a longer night’s sleep. I would like to show everyone my sleep routine. My doctor agrees to post the 99 more one month old babies’ sleep routines, to make a 100 babies’ sleep routine web-page for dads and moms who have newborn babies.
Total sleep time: 13 hours
6-10am look around, talking, singing, and dancing with mom
10-11am nap,11-12noon feeding,
12-3pm nap,
3-7pm love to be the baby carrier, non-stop talking, playing and cooking with mom
7-10pm sleep,
10-11pm bath and feeding,
11pm-6am wakes up every 2 hours for feeding and goes back to sleep quickly. |

Sleep

I sleep well over the daytime until 10pm . Then I wake up every 30minutes overnight. My parents hardly get to sleep overnight. I’m a little confused which is day and night, because I have been in the dark inside my mother’s womb for 9 months. It usually takes several weeks for babies to adapt to the day and night schedule. Please wake me up in the evening so I will be a little tired and sleep several more hours during the night. 09/14/07 2 weeks visit. Now I wake up from 7pm -10pm. Then I sleep and wake up every 2 hours for feeding. Yes, my parents can sleep 2 hours periods overnight. |

My parents start reading books to me about 20 minutes a day. I can stay with my brother for the book reading without fussy or crying for 10 minutes each time. I have half hour music time a day and I do pay attention to piano playing by my brother. My parents and my brother sing to me a lot. My mother told my doctor that she will let me expose more to music. No TV watch and no TV exposure to me. |

I like to look the bright light when I wake up during the night. My doctor told my mother that the newborn can only see the brightest things 50x as bright as adults can see. Until 12 months old, the babies have equal brightness perception to adults. Please make my room bright when I wake up so my eyes will get more stimulation and I truly enjoy seeing more around this world . |

Bowel Movement

I usually have bowel movement every three days. But I haven’t had one for six days. My appetite is good, my tummy is soft, and I’m not vomiting. My parents worry about me. Please don’t. If I have bowel obstruction, my appetite will get worse, my tummy will get bigger, and I will vomit. My doctor inserted a thermometer into my anus and moved it back and forth. Wow, see my poo! |
