Ecology, technology, anthropology. What do they have in common besides the same last five letters? They’re all forms of science! Science is a very wide and expansive topic. Many professions work with or need science in order to work. Science can be split into four main groups- natural, social, formal, and applied. Natural science is the study of natural occurrences and biological life. Biology is a branch of natural science that deals with every characteristic of living organisms and how they interact with their environment. Biology can further be split up into subjects such as ecology, physiology, and biochemistry. The rest of the group of natural science deals with astronomy, chemistry, earth science, and physics. Social science is the study of human behavior and societies. Some studies of social science are economics, psychology, social studies, and history. Formal science deals with theorectical formal systems and includes topics such as logic, mathematics, and computer science. Applied science is applying knowledge from one or more natural scientific fields to solve practical problems. Engineering and technology are examples of subjects in applied sciences. In elementary school, middle school, and high school, all students learn multiple forms of science-math, biology, and earth science for example. From figuring out how many minutes you have until the bus comes to listening answering a question on your biology test, you are using science. Science plays a big role in our daily lives. In school, at home, or even on vacation, science is necessary on a daily basis.
